ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis is to study the biological concepts of language held by three linguists, namely Noam Chomsky, Derek Bickerton and Philip Lieberman, to compare the three conceptions, and to reach conclusions regarding the standards of adequacy of the three views. A chapter is devoted to each biological conception of language studies, Chapter 2 to Chomsky's mentalism, Chapter 3 to Bickerton's bioprogram and Chapter 4 to Lieberman's evolutionary approach. In each of these chapters an outline of the particular conception of language is given, to provide background and a point of departure. The respects in which the particular conception is biological are then identified and discussed in detail. Direct and indirect statements by each linguist regarding language as something biological are presented, and various problems identified by critics in the conception of language are noted and discussed. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die oogmerk van hierdie tesis is om die biologiese konsepsies van teal van drie linguiste, naamlik Noam Chomsky, Derek Bickerton en Philip Lieberman, te bestudeer. Voorts om die drie konsepsies met mekaar te vergelyk en ten slotte om die toereikendheid van die drie konsepsies te beoordeel.
