Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Overhead electric lines -- Data processing Telephone lines -- Data processing Dissertations -- Engineering Thesis (M. Ing.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1994. The co-existence of extended power networks and telephone services requires careful planning in terms of the energy induced into metallic telephone lines. This induction can cause interference as well as danger to the telephone circuits, especially during faults on a neighboring power line. In South Africa, as in most other countries, legislation exists that stipulates the maximum limits of interference during steady state conditions and during faults on the power network. This legislation is enforced by Telkom SA, from whom route approval must be obtained before the construction of a new power line. For the calculation of induction parameters, Telkom uses a graphical technique loosely based on the 1963 C.C.I.T.T. Directives, as well as on work done by Pollaczek in 1926. Subsequent refinement of the theory by the C.C.I.T.T. has led to numerous addendums to the 1963 Directives, and, in 1989, a complete new set of Directives. This report provides a description of a computer programme designed to implement the 1989/1963 Directives thereby providing a software tool that can replace the graphical technique for route approval and can also be of general use in interference studies.
