This study describes: A) the development of an improved method for the synthesis of 2-phenylaziridines from their 2-phenyl-2-X-ethylammonium precursors, and its application to the preparation of 4-benzyloxy- and 4-acetoxy-substituted 2-phenylaziridines, b) the synthesis of 1-phenyl-2-X-ethylammonium compounds from acetophenone, c) the synthesis of4-benzyloxy- and 4-av=cetoxy-substituted 2-phenyl-2-X-ethylammonium compounds, d) the development of a new strategy for the synthesis of phenolic aziridine precursors and its application in the preparation of 4-hydroxy- and 3,4-dihydroxy-substituted 2-X-ethylammonium compounds, e) the first example of the preparation of a N-unsubstituted aziridine following the method of Appel et al., f) the synthesis of a number of related 2-oxazolidones, g) the interconversions of ten 2-phenylaziridines, their 2-X-ethylammonium precursors and corresponding 2-oxazolidones.
