ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation explores the interaction that takes place during the adaptation of a story as a screenplay and the subsequent translation of the screenplay into a film. The focus falls on two Afrikaans examples, 'n Wêreld sonder grense and Fiela se kind, as well as the British film adaptation of The French lieutenant's woman. As this study is concerned with both literature and film, the relation between both mediums is taken as a starting point. An examination of the "differences" between literature and film proves that the two media are remarkably similar and that dissimilarities are often not differences in kind but in degree. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie proefskrif behels 'n ondersoek na die veranderinge wat plaasvind tydens die omsetting van 'n verhaal tot draaiboek en van draaiboek tot die uiteindelike film. Daar word gekonsentreer op twee Suid-Afrikaanse voorbeelde, 'n Wêreld sonder grense en Fiela se kind, asook die Brits filomsetting van The French lieutenant's woman. Aangesien dié studie gemoeid is met beide literatuur en die film, is dit 'n logiese beginpunt om te let op die verband tussen hierdie twee mediums. 'n Ondersoek na die "verskille" tussen letterkunde en die film bring aan die lig dat daar telkens ook sprake is van groot ooreenkomste. Verskille in graad as op wesenlike onderskeidings.
