Dept. of Psychology. Families -- Psychological aspects Marriage -- Psychological aspects Communication in families Dissertations -- Psychology Dissertation (PhD) -- Stellenbosch University, 1995. Title page incorrectly says: Natuurwetenskappe instead of Psychology. This investigation focuses on the different dimensions of normal family functioning. The constructs which are relevant to this and which occur in the various family theories are discussed comprehensively. Family cohesion and adaptability are the two variables which are emphasised in most of the theories. They are also the major dimensions of the Circumplex model (Olson, Sprenkle & Russel, 1979), which is used as the criterion for family functioning in this study. The primary aim is to identify the other family variables which are relevant to this criterion. Different theoretical perspectives on family functioning are discussed. The Circumplex model (Olson, Sprenkle & Russel, 1979) is described fully. This gives an indication of, among other things, why the model must be interpreted in a linear way at present. Important assumptions of the family development perspective are discussed. Various constructs which could have a bearing on sound family functioning, but which did not necessarily develop from a family theory, are reported. Examples of such constructs are family strengths, family satisfaction and quality of life. Some comprehensive international studies on normal families are reported. In addition to their findings, investigations in which the emphasis was on the marital relationship in specific family stages are discussed. A cross-sectional study was undertaken of four different stages of the family life cycle. White and coloured families from two magisterial districts were included in the study on a random basis. The age of the oldest child determined the family stage. After completing the questionnaires both spouses evaluated their family independently. In stage 3 families an adolescent also evaluated the family. The level of family functioning — the dependent variable — was determined with the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scale (Olson, Portner & Bell, 1989). The 37 independent variables are facets of the broad constructs family resources, family sustaining strategies as well as marital and family satisfaction. Linear regression analyses were done to identify the independent variables related to sound family functioning. Totals for spouse differences were calculated and related to important family variables. The occurrence of several marital characteristics in the regression equations of the men and the women led to a third regression analysis in which marital characteristics were the independent variables. Only 4 of the 39 measured variables showed differences between the stage. The fact that relatively few differences were found could be ascribed to, among other things, family groups that were heterogeneous and too small. For 6 of the 39 variables there were significant differences between the sexes. Differences between the sexes were further confirmed by the spouse difference totals. The evaluations of family life of the adolescents and the parents largely corresponded. For 2 of the 6 measured constructs there were significant differences between adolescents and fathers and in one case between mothers and adolescents. There was a large degree of correspondence between the sexes for identified characteristics in the regression equations. The identified variables which were linearly related to the level of family functioning were family satisfaction, satisfaction of the spouses with their sexual relationship, satisfaction with general quality of life, family strengths, flexibility in the way free time is spent in the marital relationship, sound relationships with family and friends, conflict management and resolution as well as communication within the marriage.
