This thesis is devoted to a critical evaluation of the structuralism of the French philosopher and cultural anthropologist, Claude Lévi-Strauss. This study is focussed on two issues of a problematical nature emanating from the work of Lévi-Strauss, namely firstly, the epistemological and methodological issue and secondly, the philosophical-anthropological issue. The importance of the first issue lies in Lévi-Strauss's aim to debate the scientific status of cultural anthropology in terms of a structurally inspired epistemology and methodology. In this connection the aim of this study is to decide to what extent Lévi-Strauss succeeds in achieving his goal. The second issue must be considered in close association with the first. Here an evaluation is made of Lévi-Strauss's philosophical anthropology, that is to say of the image of man and the cultural criticism that he has developed in that respect. In opposition to phenomenology and existential philosophy, Lévi-Strauss with his epistemological-methodological approach actually also opened up the possibility of developing an ontology of human existence in a social context, which would make a well-founded cultural criticism possible. In this connection the focus is on Lévi-Strauss's view regarding rationality and his new humanism. Chapter I demarcates the field of research and the subject of the study. This is done against the background of a specific socio-political intellectual context within which Lévi-Strauss makes his contribution. In Chapter II Lévi-Strauss's structuralism is placed in historical context concerning the concept of and the problems in cultural anthropology as a discipline. In this regard this study considers which influences of Lévi-Strauss's structuralism play a role and looks at the solutions he offers to problems in his discipline. In Chapter III in-depth research is done on epistemologic-metho- dological points of departure in Lévi-Strauss's scientific study of the discipline. Here, inter alia, the interdependent aspects of the conceptual framework of Lévi-Strauss's structuralism are isolated. It is also shown that the subject of Lévi-Strauss's scientific investigation on a meta-empirical level, underlying the variety of culturally aware utterances, must be searched for on an unconscious "structural" level. There is also a summary of the operational procedures which, according to Lévi-Strauss, must be followed by the anthropologist studying the object of investigation. In Chapter IV the substantive results achieved by Lévi-Strauss in his investigations are considered. In this regard it is shown how Lévi-Strauss approached and described the so-called savage mind of "primitive" culture, and on what grounds he could assert that this savage mind is less irrational than is normally accepted in the western world. It is also shown how this view of the savage mind offers the key to Lévi-Strauss's new humanism and his criticism of the industrial society. In the final chapter, Chapter V, a detailed evaluation is given of Lévi-Strauss's epistemology, his scientific methodology, his view of rationality and his new humanism.
