ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The morphology of the flower of Pelargonium was studied to determine the characteristics of taxonomic importance. The first aim was to find characteristics which could be used to distinguish between taxa. A second was to ascertain whether the genus could be subdivided into smaller taxonomic units on floral characteristics. Live flowers of a representative number of taxa of each section were studied. This was supplemented by a study of herbarium specimens of each taxon. Diagnostic features were drawn up for each taxon and these were used in a key to identify taxa of the different sections. The study has proved that several flower characteristics are of taxonomic importance. Characteristics that reveal relationships separate some of the sections as natural taxa and can also be used to divide some sections into smaller units. Furthermore it has become evident that some species were previously placed in wrong sections. Theories about the relationships and phylogeny of the various sections are presented. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die uitwendige morfologie van die blom van Pelargonium is bestudeer om vas te stel watter blornkenmerke gebruik kan word om taksons van mekaar te onderskei. Terselfdertyd is ooreensteI!Ililende blomkenmerke ondersoek om vas te stel of die genus op grand van blomkenrnerke in kleiner taksonomiese eenhede verdeel kan word. Lewende blonnne van 'n verteenwoordigende aantal taksons van elke seksie is bestudeer. Hierdie ondersoek is aangevul deur 'n studie van 'n aantal herbariurneksemplare van elke takson. Diagnostiese kenmerke vir elke takson is opgestel en hierdie kenrnerke is gebruik om 'n sleutel op te stel waarrnee die taksons van elke seksie identifiseer kan word. Uit die ondersoek het dit geblyk dat verskeie blomkenmerke gebruik kan i-mrd om spesies van mekaar te onderskei. Ooreenstemmende en verwante blornkenmerke baken sommige seksies as natuurlike taksons af, en dit kan oak gebruik word om sonnnige seksies in kleiner taksonomiese een~1ede te verdeel. 'n Studie van die blommorfologie het oak aan die lig gebring <lat somrnige spesies verkeerdelik in seksies geplaas is.
