ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to provide information concerning the principles of music therapy as a discipline as well as the state of music therapy in South Africa at present. In order to achieve this purpose two main areas were studied, namely music therapy as a comprehensive world phenomenon and more specifically the development of organised music therapy in South Africa, the degree of involvement of the. members of the South African organised bodies for music therapy and the degree to which music therapy is being applied by institutions for the handicapped. Research methods used were a national survey, interviews with some of the persons involved in music therapy and investigation of the literature. The survey of members of the two organised bodies for South African music therapy yielded 140 responses. Sixty-two of these respondents are/were involved in providing music with extra-musical aims. The survey of the institutions for the handicapped yielded 281 responses (77,62%). 87,86% of these. institutions are interested in receiving more information concerning music therapy and its application. The conclusions reached were that music therapy in South Africa is at present only at the beginning of its development, but that the climate for the subject area is highly positive so that there are good prospects for the future growth of the discipline in South Africa.
