Stellenbosch University. Faculty of AgriSciences. Dept. of Soil Science. Soils -- South Africa -- Southern Cape Fynbos ecology Dissertations -- Agriculture Thesis (M.Sc. Agric.) -- University of Stellenbosch,1987. At Pella, colour and monochrome aerial photo pairs were used for initial photo interpretation. A fixed grid method (Young, 1976) was used and 56 soil pits were dug and numerous auger samples taken in the 269 hectare site. In Swartboschkloof a single monochrome enlargement of a small scale colour aerial photo was used for initial photo interpretation. Because of the nature of the terrain and various problems in the field, a free survey method (Young, 1976) was adopted. Approximately 120 pits were dug, but very little augering done on the 373 hectare site. At both sites soils were classified, using the South African Binomial System (Macvicar et al., 1977), into soil forms and series on the basis of their morphological, chemical and physical features. At Pella ten soil forms and fourteen soil series were identified and a 1 :2 000 soils map compiled based on this classification. In Swartboschkloof eleven soil forms and sixteen soil series were identified. A 1:5 000 soils map was compiled, based on this work.
