Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Science. Dept. of Botany & Zoology. Nudibranchia -- Reproduction -- Morphology Nudibranchia -- Reproduction -- Histology Opisthobranchia -- Reproduction Dissertations -- Zoology Thesis (M. Sc.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1990. Cratena capensis is a simultaneous hermaphrodite with a diaulic reproductive system. In all specimens collected during the early months of the year the male region of the acini are densely packed, mostly with morphologically mature spermatozoa and the ampulla distended with autosperms. In the female region the previtellogenetic stages predominate and each acinus contains only two or three apparently fully grown oocytes. Oocytes are absent in the male region as well as the ampulla. A well-developed sphincter muscle is situated around the external boundary between the male and female regions of an acinus. The pre-ampullar hermaphrodite duct enters the ampulla dorsally, approximately one third from the anterior region of the ampulla. Ciliation in the ampulla is restricted to a strip between the openings of the pre-ampullar and the post-ampullar hermaphrodite duct. The ciliated strip in the ampulla functions as a short cut mechanism for rapid transportation of oocytes. No definite distinction in the transition between membrane and mucous gland can be observed. In all specimens examined the membrane gland is completely inactive. The nuclei of the secretory cells are pycnotic and the cytoplasm shows no secretory activity. In the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells of the receptaculum seminis containing allosperms a few large vacuoles are present whereas in specimens with an empty receptaculum seminis, vacuoles are absent. The vas deferens is glandular throughout except for a short preprostatic region following the bifurcation. The prostate opens at the base of the copulatory organ. The copulatory complex consists of a copulatory sac, a copulatory organ and an accessory gland. The copulatory organ as well as accessory gland are outfoldings of the wall of the copulatory sac. The accessory gland is characterized by two types of erectile tissue. At the base the erectile tissue consists of large irregularly-shaped cells with few intercellular blood spaces in between whereas the erectile tissue in the anterior region of the anteriorly projected handle consists of small cells with many intercellular blood spaces in between. The actual gland is embedded in a core of erectile tissue formed by both types of tissue.
