Faculty of Science. Dept. of Chemistry & Polymer Science. Water chemistry Polyamides Amino acids Dissertations -- Chemistry Thesis (M. Sc.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1990. Polyamide-3 (PA-3) and Polyamide-11 (PA-11) and a series of copolymers of PA-3 and PA-11 were prepared by polycondensation of w-aminoacids. Mass changes of the prepared polymers on absorption of water as a function of time and mass percentage water absorbed were monitored. The maximum amount of water absorbed by the polymers correlated with the values predicted by a modified Flory-Huggins theory and an empirical method. The exception was the PA-3 polymer. The amount of water absorbed by the PA-3 polymer was much higher than predicted. This discrepancy was caused by swelling of the polymer. A good agreement was also found between the actual and calculated diffusion coefficient of water in the polymer.
