Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Education. Dept. of Curriculum Studies. Geography -- Study and teaching (Secondary) Curriculum planning Teaching, Departmental system of Dissertations -- Education Thesis (MEd) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1990. The aim of this research is to determine the role played by the geography subject head in curriculum development in the teaching of geography at the senior secondary school level. Effective subject head guidance for geography is largely determined by an embracing knowledge of and skill in educational guidance, curriculum development, and of geography as school subject. The geography subject head can make a very valuable contribution with regard to the general, but particularly the curriculating functions at the level of planning of school phases and school types, syllabus development, school curriculum, subject curriculum and micro-curriculating in the classroom. It would appear, however, that the geography subject head is not equipped for such an embracing task. It seems that the degree of active participation in curriculum development regarding school geography is too low.On the basis of an empirical investigation done in some secondary schools in the Cape Province, the afore-mentioned assumptions were tested and to a large extent verified as correct. In chapter two attention is given to the term geography subject head, as well as to the structure and value of geography as a school subject. Geography's man-environment bondage serves as a link with reality - a function which few other basic science fulfils - and serves as a rasionale for geography as a science. The cognitive, affective and psycho-motorial value of this discipline is defined.Chapter three contains explanations of both the relevant terms of the curriculum theory, as well as of curricular models in geography. In chapter four the exposition of an empirical investigation in which questionnaires were compiled and sent to geography subject heads in twenty secondary schools in the Cape Province which offer senior secondary geography, is described. The aim of the investigation was to determine the present position and shortcomings of geography subject head involvement and knowledge of curriculum development. Various shortcomings were exposed. On the basis of these findings, deductions and suggestions could be made.Chapter five contains the curriculating functions of the geography subject head with regard to the general functions, as well as specific curriculating areas. Under the general functions, the geography subject head is classified as an educational leader, as leader in his subject area and of a subject group. These specific curriculating areas include the geography subject head's role with regard to planning of school phases and school types, syllabus development, broad school curriculum, the development of the subject curriculum and micro-curriculating in the classroom. A progressive degree of involvement by the geography subject head comes to the fore with regard to these areas. In the description of the geography subject head's curriculating functions, the tendencies and findings of an empirical investigation were continually referred to. In the final chapter there is a concise review of the entire research, as well as suggestions and possible areas for further research. This research verifies the statement that the geography subject head must have an embracing knowledge of curriculum development, and of geography as school subject. These skills will enable him to give effective geography subject head guidance.
