Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. Temperament in children Adjustment (Psychology) Children -- Family relationships -- Psychological aspects Thesis (DPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 1990. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A comprehensive survey of the literature has shown that very little research has been done on the temperament of children in their middle childhood. Few research findings are available on possible connection between temperament, the functioning of the family and the child's adjustment in middle childhood. Further research in this field together with cognizance of his/her temperament and family functioning, is therefore necessary to more comprehensively understand and interpret the psychodynamics of a child with adjustment problems. In order to address the above deficiencies, research was done on a case-control basis with the following aims: (1) the determination of correlations between dimensions of temperament in middle childhood and a child's (a) adjustment and (b) family functioning and (2) the determination of differences between a group of children who have behavioral and/or emotional problems (Group 1) and a group of children who do not have such problems (Group 2) with regards to (a) dimensions of temperament, (b) adjustment and (c) family functioning. The means of evaluation consisted of the "middle Childhood Temperament Questionnaire", "Child Behavior Checklist", "McMaster Family Assessment Device", "Marital Satisfaction Questionnaire" and "Child Rearing Attitude Scale". Results indicated significance within group-correlations between certain dimensions of temperament, behavior problems, social competence, family variables and marital satisfaction. Some of the correlations were, although statistically significant, rather weak. No significant within group-correlations were found between dimensions of temperament and parenting styles. Children of Group 1 differed significantly from the children of Group 2 with regard to certain dimensions of temperament, behavior problems and social competence. No significant differences were found between the two groups fro family variables, marital satisfaction and parenting styles. It was concluded that the childs' temperament in interaction with family variables, must be taken into account to understand and interpret the childs' development and adjustment psychodynamically.
