ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this assignment is to explore how Reproductive Health can contribute to development and poverty reduction, looking at non-medical and gender aspects. As poverty is both a cause and consequence of ill-health, investments in Reproductive Health are highly relevant for economic development and poverty alleviation in especially the developing countries. Investments save and improve lives, slow the spread of HIV/AIDS and promote gender equality, which stabilize population growth and reduce poverty. The male-dominated gender-relations affect especially the decision-making at the household level, which has serious consequences for the women who are least able to influence decisions. Due to the extent of market failures in the field, mainly caused by the externalities, government intervention is argued for. The assignment focuses on social benefits that result from highly cost-effective strategies of prevention, exploring three key intervention areas: family planning, maternal health care and HIV/AIDS. Men and the male role are highlighted through strategies of male involvement in the key interventions. This essay points out that male involvement offers potential to improve the quality of involvements and reach gender equality. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie navorsing is om vas te stel hoe Reproduktiewe gesondheid kan bydra tot die ontwikkeling en vermindering van armoede, met die oog op nie-mediese en geslagsaspekte. Beleggings in Reproduktiewe gesondheid is baie belangrik vir ekonomiese ontwikkeling en armoedeverligting in veral die ontwikkelende lande, omdat armoede beide 'n oorsaak en gevolg is van slegte gesondheid. Beleggings verbeter lewens, vertraag die verspreiding van MIV/VIGS en bevorder geslagsgelykheid, wat die polulasiegroei stabiliseer en armoede verminder. Manlik gedomineerde geslagsverhoudings beinvloed veral die besluitneming op huishoudelike vlak, wat ernstige gevolge het vir vroue wat die minste mag het om besluite te beinvloed. Ingryping deur die regering word bepleit as gevolg van die omvang van markgebreke, wat hoofsaaklik veroorsaak word deur buite invloede. Hierdie navorsing lê klem op die sosiale voordele wat verkry word van hoogs koste-effektiewe strategieë van voorkoming, wat die drie ingrypingsareas: gesinsbeplanning, moeder gesondheidsorg en MIV/VIGS, ondersoek. Mans en die manlike rol word beklemtoon deur die strategieë van die manlike betrokkenheid in die sleutel intervensies. Hierdie werkstuk dui daarop dat manlike betrokkenheid die potensiaal bied om die kwaliteit van betrokkenheid te verbeter en om geslagsgelykheid te bereik.
