Stellenbosch, the oldest town in South Africa, was founded by Simon can der Stel in 1679. During the 18th century, several fires devastated the town and lay many buildings in ruins. However, in the 20th century many if the remaining buildings were in danger of being demolished by people who were in favour of so-called progress - especially after the Second World War. The appearance of the town core of Stellenbosch started to change considerably and in the fifties the preservation of the Old Stellenbosch was a topic that cropped up in debates and meetings of the Stellebosch Town Council. Many residents were set against the demolition of old buildings and, especially in the sixties and seventies, they approached several organisations that had to see to it that these buildings were preserved. These organisations were among others the National Monuments Council (NMC), the Simon van der Stel Foundation, the Historical Homes of South Africa, Limited, the Stellenbosch 300 Action, the Cape Provincial Administration and the Stellenbosch Town Council. The Town Council eventually decided to determine the boundaries of the town core in order to protect these buildings by law. The Braak, with its adjacent buildings, forms a unique historical and architectural complex within this defined town core. The preservation of the Braak as well as Dorp, Drostdy, Plein, Ryneveld and Andringa Streets is attributable to the people and organisations that made this possible. Although these preservation actions could not always ensure that a building was safeguarded against demolition, it made the residents of Stellenbosch aware of the importance of preserving the old buildings for future generations. In 1974, the demolition of the Sawant building caused such an indignation among the residents of the town that it actually served as further incentive to the task of preservation. This incident is regarded as the turning-point in the struggle against the demolition of old buildings. In 1979, during the 300th anniversary celebration of Stellenbosch, the preservation actions came to a head when a large number of buildings were proclaimed by the NMC and later restored by house owners or companies. Today the preservation of the tangible cultural heritage of Stellenbosch, which includes buildings of historical, architectural and aesthetical value, is mainly attributable to the initially small group of people that tirelessly endeavoured to protect old buildings and that later developed into a large-scale campaign.
