In this thesis I undertake an investigation into a number of theatre strategies to demonstrate how these can be used not only as theatre strategies, but more specifically as teaching strategies to make the various genres in literature more accessible to the secondary pupil. After an investigative survey of the methodology of teaching literature at secondary school level, it is concluded that existing teaching methods need to be supplemented. Many practical examples are drawn from my own experience to explain and suggest ways of applying the various strategies. The use of especially improvisation as a multi-purpose strategy is described in detail. The novel Swart Pelgrim was adapted for the stage and performed by black actors. This experiment serves as a core example in the research and also as a theatre laboratory in which the problems peculiar to this project are highlighted and evaluated. At the same time, a theatre-in-education project, based on this novel, is described to present an alternative point of view.
