AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Gedurende die jaar 1953 het daar by verskeie persone aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch die gedagte ontstaan dat daar omvattende studie van die Wes-Kaaplandse streek, en veral wat betref die posisie van die Kleurlingbevolking van die gebied, gedoen moet word. Onder leiding van prof. C.G.W. Schumann van die Universiteit van Stellenbosch, wat eerste vorm aan die gedagte gegee het, het die idee algemene byval gevind en is onmiddellik besluit om 'n langtermyn-projek met bogenoemde oogmerke te onderneem. Gedurende 1954 is 'n voorlopige raamwerk en program vir so 'n projek uitgewerk en sedert April 1955, toe die NAsionale Raad vir Sosiale Navorsing sy finansiële steun aan die projek toegesê het, word aktief daaraan gewerk. Die ontstaan van die ondersoek i.v.m. die onderwerp waaroor hierdie spesifieke verhandeling gaan, spruit dus direk uit die doelstelling van die Wes-Kaaplandse Navorsingsprojek.
