ENGLISH ABSTRACT: When research is done regarding a period in the educational history of the Cape Colony during the 19th century, the lack of information about James Rose Innes, the first Superintendent General of Education, is conspicuous. There is also a wide difference of opinion regarding his contribution to the development of an educational system at the Cape during his career. This divergence of opinion is in a large measure attributable to the lack of a study in which the merits and the defects of James Rose Innes may be seen in perspective. Conclusions have too easily been drawn on insufficient evidence owing to the fact that the available documents require careful analysis and interpretation before the necessary perspective can be obtained which would enable a researcher to give a true picture of Innes as an educationist.
