Ing.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1990. Different cooling systems usable in power plants are discussed briefly. Two types of dry-wet cooling systems namely a dry cooling tower with an adiabatic precooling system and a combined dry- and evaporative cooler system are investigated in detail. In this thesis excisting computer programs were extended and rounded off to mathematically model these two cooling systems. Methods to evaluate finned tube evaporative coolers were also investigated. By making use of these programs, methods to compare the cooling systems and so choose the best alternative for a specific case, were developed. The programs can also be used to design and evaluate different dry and dry-wet cooling systems.
