Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. Dept. of Industrial Psychology. Job evaluation Dissertations -- Industrial psychology Thesis (Ph. D.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1990. The main problems addressed by this study are: (1) the validity of job evaluation systems has seemingly never been investigated empirically, (2) no generic model exists concerning job evaluation validity, or even applied assessment of validity in general. Accordingly, the main objective of this study is to define and empirically apply a nomological validity model that specifies generic evidential bases for construct- and criterion-related validity, on three flagship job evaluation systems (the Paterson, Perreanes and Hay systems). It was found that: -Job evaluation systems investigated have a high criterion-related validity concerning the ultimate criterion domain, compensable job worth. -Job evaluation systems investigated have no construct-related validity concerning the predictor construct job complexity, as represented by decision-making, problem-solving, know-how, and related factors. -Job evaluation systems investigated have a high construct-related validity concerning the predictor construct comparative impressiveness of jobs, as represented by general desirability of occupations, felt-fair pay, and perceived job importance constructs. -Validity profiles of systems investigated are probably generalisable to other job evaluation systems. -The nomological validity models have a high retest reliability and a high criterion-related validity. Paradigms proposed in this dissertation are intended to contribute to (1) the development of job evaluation from a mere technology to the status of a science, (2) a deeper understanding of measurement validity, and how this concept is operationalised in nomological networks.
