Mooring towers are increasingly used for the loading of oil products to tankers from offshore installations. As with any other off-shore structure, knowledge of the effect of nature on the mooring tower is very important. The aim of this study is to predict the response of a mooring tower in various weather conditions in an irregular sea. The mooring tower is modelled as a bilinear oscillator, namely a forced second order oscillator with a discontinuity in stiffness due to the slackening of the mooring rope. A wave spectrum was implemented to generate a realistic irregular forcing. The system was found to have a variety of complex phenomena, including subharmonic resonances, bifurcations and possible chaotic motions.
