The survival of mankind is interwoven with the state of the environment. Because of man's direct influence on his environment, the latter should be considered in the education of children. The main objective with this study is therefore to investigate the potential contribution of Geography to Environmental Education. In order to achieve this, the field objectives and essence of Environmental Education are ascertained. International tendencies in this field and the contribution to Environmental Education made by various organisations in the Republic of South Africa are shown. The teaching of Geography in the RSA is investigated with emphasis on the nature of the discipline, teaching approach and objectives at school level. It is shown that Geography is a discipline that bridges the gap between man and his physical environment, and special attention is given to the system approach in Geography teaching. The contribution of Geography to Environmental Education lies in an attempt to try and change the student's attitude towards his environment. The teaching of Geography at school level must therefore address the pupil's value systems. In this study nine activities are established that, therefore, show the teaching methods and strategies for value-education in Geography. Finally the study leads to conclusions and recommendations in order to promote the objectives of Environmental Education.
