Masters There are a variety of syntactic constructions in Hebrew by which exclamations can be expressed. The problem to be investigated in the mentioned study was thus: Are there specific syntactic features by which exclamations are recognisable and should exclamations be considered a syntactic category at all? In chapter 1 this problem is highlighted by means of a few examples. It is also shown why hy yhwh/nfsk en hlylh are suitable examples by which the investigation could be carried through. Certain aspects of the modern linguistic approach to grammar are discussed in chapter 2. A comparison with the traditional approach is made, from which certain conclusions for the study are drawn, A linguistic framework is formulated which serves as a basis for the study. In the following chapter a critical investigation into the ways existing Hebrew grammar deals with exclamations is made. An evaluation of the approach of the various grammarians is made in each case. In chapter 4 exclamations in 1 and 2 are investigated. Each case is individually discussed to determine whether it be considered an exclamation or not. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Uitroepe en uitroepsinne kan in Hebreeus deur 'n verskeidenheid sintaktiese konstruksies uitgedruk word. Die probleemstelling van die genoemde studie is dus die volgende: Is daar vaste sintaktiese kenmerke waaraan uitroepe/uitrowpsinne herkenbaar is, en moet uitroepsinne hoegenaams as 'n sintaktiese kategorie beskou word? Nadat hierdie probleem aan die hand van 'n paar voorbeelde in hoofstuk 1 gestel is, is ook kortliks aangetoon waarom hy yhwh/nfsk en hlylh geskikte voorbeelde is aan die hand waarvan die probleem ondersoek kan word. In hoofstuk 2 is aandag gegee aan sekere aspekte van die moderne taalwetenskaplike kenmerke grammarikale benadering. Deur dit met die traditionele benaderinf=g te vergelyk, is aangetoon atter implikasies die taalwetenskaplike benadering vir die studie inhou. Verder is ;n taalwetenskaplike raamwerk geformuleer waarbinne die studie aangepak wou word. In die volgende hofstuk is krities ondersoen hoe bestaande grammatikas uitroepe/uitroepsinne hanteer. Telkens is 'n oordeel oor die benadering van die individuele grammatikas gemaak. In hoofstuk 4 is uitroepe/ uitroepsinne in 1 en 2 Samuel ondersoek. 'n Oordeel is in alle gevalle gemaak of die betrokke konstruksie as uitroep geïnterpreteer moet word al dan nie.
