A multidisciplinary approach was followed to determine whether the heterogeneity within the section Cortusina (DC.) Harv. (genus Pelargonium L’Hérit.) justifies a subdivision of the section. Morphological, anatomical, palynological, karyological and geographical criteria were used, and the investigation was supplemented by a study of the plants in their natural environments. Differences were found with regard to various characteristics, and the species of the section Cortusina were divided into two groups. P. album J.J.A. v.d. Walt, P. dichondrifolium DC., P. odoratissimum (L.) L’Hérit., P. reniforme Curt. and P. sidoides DC. were grouped together in a new section Reniformia (Knuth) Dreyer. The section Reniformia was described and typified, the species were taxonomically revised and a key was compiled to distinguish between the taxa. P. reniforme was divided into subsp. reniforme and subsp. velutinum (Eckl. & Zeyh.) Dreyer. The possible phylogenetic positions of the sections Cortusina sensu stricto and Reniformia are given along with the interspecific relationships in each.
