Radiobiology Radiation injuries Radiation -- Physiological effect Dissertations -- Medicine Thesis (Ph.D.(Med.Sc.)) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1990. As a result of clinical and experimental studies performed in the 1970's the heart is today regarded as a radiosensitive organ (For review see Stewart and Fajardo, 1984). Although it has been demonstrated that radiation caused myocardial ultrastructural changes as well as a depression in mechanical activity of the heart, complete unanimity regarding the pathogenesis of radiation induced heart disease has not been reached. Although microvascular injury has been commonly reported, different aspects of radiation induced myocyte injury have been stressed by various workers. Furthermore, to date, no information is available regarding the effects of radiation on myocardial metabolism.
