Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Education. Dept. of Educational Psychology. English teachers -- Training of English language -- Study and teaching (Higher) -- Afrikaans speakers Second language acquisition Dissertations -- Education Thesis (M. Ed.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1990. This study addresses the problem of the low level of proficiency in English amongst Afrikaans-speaking Teachers' College students and suggests ways of alleviating the problem. The researcher found that the limited amount of time available for classroom teaching at a Teachers' College was complicated by the lack of exposure of most students to English outside the classroom, and that communicative activities alone did not suffice to improve students' proficiency in English significantly. It was hypothesized that one of the root causes of students' lack of proficiency was centred around attitude. According to Dulay and Burt's Affective Filter Hypothesis a 'filter' or kind of mental block can prevent input from being used for language acquisition. This pilot study found that the Affective Filter was a major determinant in L2 acquisition, that it could be lowered by means of an 'affectively positive situation' and that this had a positive effect on the acquisition of English. The 'affectively positive situation' was created by means of positive language, positive suggestion, music and physical and mental relaxation exercises.
