The analysis of gut the contents of 190 specimens of Burchell’s redfin minnow, Pseudobarbus burchelli, showed that these cyprinids are opportunistic carnivores, feeding mainly on a wide variety of benthic invertebrates, and not solely on detritus as assumed in available literature. It was found that P. burchelli exhibits a stronger preference for live invertebrates than for detritus or plant material, but that they were not particularly selective with regard to invertebrate prey groups or species. Juveniles were found to feed almost entirely on macro-invertebrates, broadening their food spectrum with increasing size. Feeding patterns were strongly influenced by water temperature and the diel cycle, while the most important determinant of the composition of their diet appeared to be the relative abundance of benthic macro-invertebrates. Feeding took place throughout the diel cycle, with peak feeding activity during the night and early morning.
