Parent and child Hearing impaired children -- Family relationships Stress (Psychology) Dissertations -- Psychology Thesis (M.A.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1990. In the present study an attempt was made to compare the amount of stress experienced by mothers of hearing-impaired children with stress experienced by fathers. The sample consisted of parents of children who attended the Carel du Tait Centre at Tygerberg Hospital. All parents were interviewed by the researcher. The measuring instruments used were a Biographical Questionnaire (BQ) and the short-form of The Questionnaire on Resources and Stress (QRS-F). The BQ was constructed by the researcher in order to obtain demographic data efficiently. It consisted of items covering, inter alia, age of parents, their educational qualifications, the child's degree of hearing-impairment and whether the cause of the hearing loss was known. The QRS-F yields a global score and four subscale scores. The global score of the QRS-F gives an indication of the family's stress and coping abilities. Each of the four sub-scales yields scores giving an indication of the degree to which that dimension is present in the family. The four dimensions are parent and family problems, pessimism, child characteristics. and physical incapacitation.
