Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Visual Arts. Conceptual art Postmodernism Art, Modern -- 20th century Dissertations -- Art Thesis (MA) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1990. This is a study to align some of the events in history of art to the structure of revolutions. The similarities and differences between the changes in scientific development and art history are studied. The theory of the structure of revolutions in science by Thomas Kuhn is used as an analogy for the structure of artistic revolution. One such event in recent art history is studied, namely the revolution from the Conceptual art period of the 1970’s to the Post-Modern art period of the 1980’s. This is used as a broad basis to apply the appropriate theory concerning change. The artists are selected to represent painting and sculpture in such a way as to reflect various media and opinions. For obvious reasons this is a restricted group of artists selected particularly to clarify this viewpoint. Parallels are drawn between the work of the conceptual artists, the structure of change and the work of the post-modern artists.
