ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis concerns the development of a World Class Manufacturing (WCH) implementation strategy for PLESSEY S. A. by means of the introduction of a Pilot manufacturing cell in the telecoms assembly area. The improvements effected by the introduction of the pilot cell are evaluated by means of a pre and post pilot audit. The steps followed to develop the implementation strategy commenced with a review of the underlying World Class Manufacturing concepts and principles. The two-stage process of preparing and running a World Class Manufacturing environment was reviewed. The objectives of the project were set on the guidelines of PLESSEY S. A. manufacturing key result areas (KRA'S). A pilot project was identified for the Teleconms assembly area. A pre pilot audit was conducted and during and after implementation of the pilot project, a post pilot audit was conducted. An implementation strategy for WCM for PLESSEY S.A. was then formulated on bat is of the principles and concepts of the two—stage process, combined with experience gained in the pilot project. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis behels die ontwikkeling van tn wéreldklasvervaar—digingstrategie (WKV) vir PLESSEY S.A. Dit is gedoen deur 'n loodsvervaardigingsel in die Telecomms—samestellingsarea te impiementeer. Die verbeterings wat behaal is, word geévalueer deur middel van 'n voor— en na—loodsprojekoudit. Die stappe wat gevolg is om die implementeringstrategie te ont—vikkel het begin met 'n ondersoek na die onderliggende wereld—klasvervaardigingskonsepte en —teorie. Daarna is die volgende stappe gevolg: 'n Loodsvervaardigingsel is geimplementeer. 'n Voor— en naloodsprojek—oudit is uitgevoer.{i) iv) 'n Algemene strategie Vir S is opgestel.
