Abject poverty is a real, concrete crisis in the lives of an alarming percentage of people, and presents an enormous challenge to the church. The researcher's aim in this study is to find practical theological directives for a broader understanding of one aspect of the church's involvement with the poor, namely pastoral care. The primary problem to be researched is: In which way would an extension of pastoral aid by means of diakonia assist the church in effective care of the poor? The secondary problem to be researched is: In which way would a broader theological anthropology serve as hermeneutical basis for tho understanding of man in the context of poverty, on the one hand, and for the understanding of Scripture with regards to the church's action in such a context of poverty, on the other hand?
