spelling oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/69209 Die Prometheussimbool in die antieke filosofie Enslin, John Victor Esterhuyse, W. P. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Philosophy. Mythology, Greek Mythology -- Philosophy Prometheus (Greek deity) Dissertations -- Philosophy Tesis (M.A.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1991. This study takes as starting point the meaninglessness which is being experienced in contemporary Western society. It is being suggested that by a hermeneutical returning to the world of myths this crisis could be averted in that myths carry within themself a germ of meaning and life. This is being illustrated by the example of the Prometheusmyth. In Chapter 1 the above mentioned crisis is discussed. After a philosophical motivation arguing for the relevancy of the mythic-symbolic language a definition of myths and their function is being put forward. Lastly a hermeneutic program is suggested by which three authors of antiquity, who wrote on this myth, namely Hesiod (Chapter 2), Aeschylus (Chapter 3) and Plato (Chapter 4) are being understood in a way in which the Prometheussymbol and its effect can be seen. In the final chapter of this study an understanding of reality, starting from some of the dimensions of meaning inherent to the Prometheussymbol are being formulated. Here it will be seen that Prometheus is the symbol of unconditional humanity: a humanity in rebellion against any form of oppression that limits its own freedom and autonomy, be it human, divine, even any form of thinking, for example ideologies. Prometheus posits, in freedom, his selftranscendence in himself and in his fellow-beings, and in this he sees the ground of all meaning. This he builds on the hope he embodies in himself, that is, the hope that he carries within himself the key and guarantee of his future. In conclusion it can be said that a study of myths becomes a sine qua non for any philosophical activity.
