Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Drama. Theater and society Performing arts -- Philosophy Rites and ceremonies Dissertations -- Drama Tesis (M.A.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1991. Ritual theatre has been looked at from many different angles. This thesis doesn't concentrate on a historical perspective, but rather on the phenomenon of ritual theatre appearing just when the very existence of theatre seems to be in question. Various approach to ritual are also looked at. As ritual and therefore ritual theatre has to do with man and his needs and fears, it makes sense to look at the different aspects directly connected to man and his environment. That is why the religious, anthropological, biological, cosmological and dramatic approaches are discussed. The respective drama theories of Richard Schechner and Wole Soyinka are discussed and they offer valuable insights into the terrain of ritual drama. Ritual drama is discussed against the background of the Greek period, the more recent avant-garde movements and in an African context. These discussions include references to specific performances. The thesis tries to emphasise the dynamic interaction which exists between actor and audience as an indispensable element of ritual theatre throughout it's various phases. Man in conflict, is the primary subject of ritual drama. I therefore conclude my thesis by postulating that ritual drama will keep on appearing at interevals as long as man experiences conflict or tension.
