spelling oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/69225 Die struktuur en kerugma van Sagaria 1-8 Fourie, Louis Cyril Henry Olivier, J. P. J. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Theology. Dept. of Old and New Testament. Bible. Zechariah, I-VIII -- Criticism, interpretation, etc. Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 1991. By reason of its unusual symbolism and its problematic literary composition, Zechariah 1–8 is well-known for the difficulty the reader experiences in understanding it. In order to cast some light on these problems, many studies in the past have researched the history of the origins of the text. Although this approach has yielded valuable insights, it has nevertheless resulted to a large degree in the fragmentation of Zechariah 1–8. The structure and cohesion of Zechariah 1–8 did not receive adequate attention so that an important dimension of the kerygma was lost. For that reason this research project aimed at examining in detail the arrangement, the micro and macro structure and the form of the text of Zechariah 1–8 in order to reveal the kerygma. Four choices were made in advance in order to achieve this aim: 1.) to treat Zechariah 1–8 as a literary whole. 2.) to use as a point of departure the final text which comprises the original text and the sections that were added later. 3.) to use a pluralism of methods where respective methods were converted into methodical facets. 4.) that language is structured and the co-bearer of the kerygma. According to the research design the respective pericopes were first delineated in the second chapter. After the most important text critical and lexical problems had been dealt with, the pericope was analysed structurally. The scrutiny of these pericopes revealed that the text of Zechariah 1–8 was structured carefully and systematically. Several chiasms, antithetic and synonymous parallels, supplementary and antithetical-complementary motives, inclusios, reciprocity and (statistically significant) repetition of keywords were found. Subsequently the focus was directed at the Gattung and the historical aspects. It became clear that Zechariah had drawn profoundly on the heritage of his predecessors. The research describes the relationship between Jahweh and his people in terms of covenant and constructs the message of salvation around the Jerusalem/Zion tradition. Ultimately the synchronic and diachronic efforts were integrated and the kerygma of each pericope defined. In chapter three the relation between the pericopes was investigated. From this transpired that Zechariah 1:1–6 was developed further in Zechariah 7:1–14, while Zechariah 1:7–6:15 was summarised in Zechariah 8:1–8. The relationship between the delta structures in Zechariah 1:7–2:17 and 8:1–23 was also pointed out. It appeared that the series of visions formed a concentric symmetrical chiasm which was planned and balanced with great precision. On the whole Zechariah 1–8 revealed a pattern of repetition. In the fourth chapter all the results were gathered to establish the kerygma of Zechariah 1–8. It became clear that the coming of a radically new era was central to the kerygma of Zechariah 1–8. In chapter five the general conclusions were presented and it was concluded that Zechariah 1–8 had been structured with extreme precision and care with a structural unity that is important and has to be taken into account for the full understanding of its kerygma.
