spelling oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/69226 Die teologies-etiese posisie van die 'Evangelicals' ten opsigte van die sosiale etiek Durand, Jacques Du Toit, D. A. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Theology. Dept. of Systematic Theology and Ecclesiology. Theology, Doctrinal Evangelicalism Social ethics Christian ethics Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 1991. For the purposes of the study the following hypotheses are held: -The inhabitants of the world experience shortages in many spheres. -The evangelicals who are working with a certain evangelisation model are inefficient because they only concentrate on the individual and his/her regeneration. -In spite of the fact that the evangelicals have changed direction since 1960, their approach is still unilateral. -On the cursed earth where all people are sinners the pretention of ideal circumstances is wrong. -All theological work and social involvement shows a preliminary and imperfect condition. To prove the hypotheses in the research a thorough study has been undertaken in connection with the evangelicals and their ethical-theological thoughts. In Chapter One the many social problems and needs of the world's inhabitants are spelt out. The historical development of the theological direction of the church is taken up in Chapters Two and Three. In the Fourth Chapter it is shown who the evangeli:als are, why they react in a certain manner and how their thoughts are formed through the controversy with the Social Gospel Movement. The pronouncements of the evangelicals on the social ethic at the big Ecumenical Conferences are the contents of Chapter Five. The last Chapter deals with the evaluation of the evangelicals and the conclusion that all theology is the work of men and therefore incomplete. In spite of everything, the evangelicals are a factor to reckon with. They also give direction to the church's ethical thinking. Unfortunately they show up to the time of Lausanne II (1989) a certain unilateral approach for the evangelization, to the detriment of the church's social responsibility. The social dimension of the gospel is not denied, but placed in second position to evangelization as the primary concern. With such an approach the difficult social problems of the earth cannot be solved. Indeed, it must be admitted that the social problems are so complicated and that man and his creation are so defiled that no group or church can create ideal circumstances on the earth. In spite of this, all churches and Christians must try to expound the gospel and its consequences for the social order of the world, to heal and help all that are broken in the kingdom of God.
