The aim of this study was to evaluate the replacing of maize with triticale cereal (USGEN 10) in diets for ruminants and specific dairy cows by means of 4 experiments. In experiment 1 a digestion trial was conducted using wethers fed four crude diets containing different proportions of triticale : maize; (1) 100 : 0, (2) 66 : 34, (3) 34 : 66, (4) 0 : 100. The wethers were fed 50 g/kg W⁰·⁷⁵ per day. Five wethers per treatment were used in a 7 day collection period. Digestibility coefficients for dry matter, organic matter and crude fibre as well as nitrogen retention were generally similar and not significantly different (p>0,05) among treatments. However, the digestibility coefficients for the ether extract with treatment 3 (82,08%) was significantly higher (p<0,01) than the digestibility coefficients for the ether extract with treatments 1;2 and 4 (72,68; 62,97 and 79,65%) respectively. The percentages of total digestible nutrients were generally similar and not significantly different (p>0,05) among treatments and were 75,95; 72,30; 79,56 and 77,73% respectively. In experiment 2 a digestion trial with four complete diets, as shown in experiment 1, was conducted using four steers per treatment. Diets were fed at 110 g/kg W⁰·⁷⁵ per day. Chromium as chromic oxide was used as a marker to determine total faecal excretion. Faecal samples were collected over a period of 8 days. Digestibility coefficients for dry matter, organic matter, crude fibre, ether extract and the percentages of total digestible nutrients were generally similar and not significantly different (p>0,05) among treatments. The percentages of total digestible nutrients with treatments 1;2;3 and 4 were 70,00; 70,57; 71,96 and 69,92% respectively. The dry matter, organic matter and protein degradation of triticale, wheat, maize and tapioca were determined in situ in experiment 3 with rumen cannulated dairy cows, and the effective dry matter, organic matter and protein rumen degradation were calculated at three different fractional outflow rates (0,02; 0,05; 0,08/h). The percentage dry matter, organic matter and protein degradation of triticale (64,1; 64,3; 74%) were significantly higher (p<0,01) than that of maize (31,8; 37,6; 36,6%) when calculated at a fractional outflow rate of 0,08/h. Four dairy concentrates containing different proportions of triticale cereal and maize cereal, as shown in experiment 1 and 2, were used in experiment 4 with 8 Friesian cows early in their second lactation in a double cross-over design. The diets were fed twice daily at 0,5 kg per liter milk produced. 20% alfalfa hay (per DM), 15% wheat straw (% per DM) and 65% oat silage (per DM) were fed ad lib. in a housing unit. Milk fat production with treatment 1 (100 triticale; 0 maize) was significantly lower (p<0,05) than milk fat production with treatments 2; 3 and 4 (0,70 vs 0,97; 0,93 and 0,92 kg/cow/day) respectively. The production of 4% fat corrected milk per dry matter intake with treatment 1 was significantly lower (p<0,05) than production with treatments 2; 3 and 4 (1,41 vs 1,65; 1,66 and 1,67 kg 4% FCM/kg DMI) respectively. Other differences were not of any significance. Experiments 1 and 2 have shown that triticale cereal can replace up to 34% of maize cereal in sheep and steer diets. Experiment 3 has shown that triticale cereal has a higher in situ degradation than maize cereal. Experiment 4 has shown that triticale cereal can replace up to 66% maize cereal in dairy concentrates without any adverse effect on milk production or milk composition.
