This thesis consists of a culture‑historical research into the Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (WAT) (The Dictionary of the Afrikaans Language) which is an overall descriptive dictionary of the Afrikaans language. The period from 1920 to 1990 is covered in three sections. Section A consists of an historic survey of the WAT which is divided into eight different phases, dealt with in eight chapters. The period under the first Chief Editor, Prof. J.J. Smith, is discussed in detail in the first five chapters. The findings of the Broeksma Afrikaans Dictionary Inquiry Committee are entered into. This committee made a detailed study of the progress and standard of the work of the WAT in 1945, as well as of the reasons why nothing had been published during the Smith period (1926‑1945). Chapter 6 outlines the history under the second Chief Editor, Dr P.C. Schoonees (1947‑1962), including the publication of the first four volumes of the WAT. Chapter 7 concentrates on the Chief Editorship of Dr F.J. Snijman (1962‑1980), whereas Chapter 8 deals with the period under the present Chief Editor, Mr. D.C. Hauptfleisch (1981‑1990), in which the processes of planning and computerising have been launched and which will probably lead to a quicker progress and a speedier termination of the work on the WAT. In Section B the life and work (with the exception of the actual work on the WAT) of the Chief Editors (chapter 9) and the editorial staff (chapter 10) attached to the WAT during the years are discussed. The versatility of their contributions in the broader context of the Afrikaans‑speaking people and their culture is accentuated. Section C is of an evaluating nature and is dedicated to the value of the WAT for Afrikaans (chapter 11). The question is also raised whether the WAT as an overall‑descriptive dictionary of the Afrikaans language was a mistake, especially against the background of the early stage of development of Afrikaans in 1926 when the work on the WAT was commenced.
