Heat exchangers -- Cooling -- Computer simulation Cooling towers -- Climatic factors Power-plants -- Cooling Dissertations -- Mechanical engineering Thesis (M. Eng. (Mechanical)) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1991. The performance effectiveness of mechanical draft air-cooled heat exchangers is adversely affected by the recirculation of plume air back into the heat exchangers's intake. A two-dimensional analytical and full scale experimental investigation as well as a literature survey regarding this phenomenon is presented. It is shown that plume recirculation is an extremely variable phenomenon influenced by the meteorological conditions, orientation nd configuration of the installation as well as the flow disturbances and pressure gradients around the heat exchanger's inlet. Accurate prediction of plume recirculation under all the operating conditions is probably not possible. However, the analytical model shows that in the absence of wind, the amount of plume recirculation is a funtion of the flow-, thermal and geometric characteristics of the heat exchanger. Equations are derived with which the performance effectiveness due to plume recirculation can be approximately evaluated for air-cooled heat exchangers having different geometrics. The field tests show that the reduction in the air-cooled heat exchangers's heat rejection capability caused by plums recirculation can result in production losses. The study revels that improper orientation and layout arrangement of the air-cooled heat exchangers with respect to nearby structures, local topography and prevailing summer winds are the major cause that enhance the occurrence of plume recirculation. Counteract measures must concentrate on these design errors. A computer simulation program was also developed with which the performance characteristics of forced draft direct condensing air-cooled heat exchangers for power stations can be critically evaluated. A considerable amount of theoretical and experimental work is included in this study to model the physical phenomena of the system. The program provides a fast and effective method to determine the cooling capacity of an air-cooled heat exchanger under various design conditions. A feature is included to determine the net effective electrical energy generated by the turbo-generator. The simulation program's capabilities are demonstrated y various examples.
