It is the purpose of this study to develop a strategic (future directed and environment conscious) perspective of the wheat industry in South Africa and thus providing a framework whereupon strategic planning and decision-making in the industry can be done. Future scenarios were used as an aid in this regard to form an idea of the possible implications that environmental influences may hold for the development of the wheat industry in the long term. The scenario developing process was directed by the identification of certain issues which may influence the future development of the South African wheat industry. These issues serve as a focus point for the development of the scenarios. Marketing issues which are addressed include the internal competitiveness of the South African wheat industry in these markets. Production issues which are receiving attention include the potential for and profitability of wheat production in South Africa. The possible influence of trends in the social, economic, political, physical-biological and technological components of the decision-making environment on these issues have been investigated and alternative scenarios concerning the future development of the South African wheat industry have been developed. Future internal socio-political and economic developments and the nature of international trade policy appear to be the most dominant environmental factors which may influence the future development of the South African wheat industry.
