The aim of dental public health services Is to Improve the oral health of the total population of the Republic of South Africa by means of the prevention and restriction of oral diseases In order to ensure optimal oral health. These services have been in existence from as early as 1938. Curative services are rendered mainly to the indigent sect:ion of the population while preventive an educational services are rendered to the total population. Dental public health services were well established before the 1983 Constitution came into operation. Health services, and more specifically dental public health services, were rendered as an own affair after the new constitutional dispensation of 1983. This holds certain implications for the, community as well as for the official.
