Roads, Gravel -- Maintenance and repair Highway engineering -- Research -- South Africa -- Cape of Good Hope, Northwestern Highway research -- South Africa -- Cape of Good Hope, Northwestern Dissertations -- Civil engineering Thesis (M. Eng. (Civil)) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1991. The maintenance of the 148 km gravel trunk road (TR 84) between Aggeneys and Loop costs R400 000 per year (1984). This is jointly financed by the "Black Mountain" mining company and the Cape Provincial Administration. The major traffic on the road consists of eleven 66 ton trucks which daily do a return trip on the road. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the present maintenance and its relationship to the optimization of the total transportation system of haulage on TR 84. It has been established that the major portion of the transportation cost is related to vehicle operating cost. Furthermore, the cost of the infrastructure and the influence of its condition on operational cost is an important factor in the financial planning of the maintenance of TR 84. The investigation consisted of the following components: 1. Field studies of insitu materials, conditions and riding quality. 2. A comprehensive literature survey. 3. Laboratory analyses. 4. Computer aided technical and economic analysis. From this it was possible to evaluate the optimum timing of expenditure on a low volume gravel road such as TR 84. Finally, a visual road rating system and pavement management system are presented to optimize maintenance of TR 84 and other low volume roads.
