The effect of surface sizing variables on the penetration of polymers into sillicone base papers was examined. Surface analysis by means of contact angle measurements and 30 laser scannings was done. PVA/CMC treatments proved results superior to PVA/Starch. High size press and film forming temperatures showed a negative influence on PVA/CMC treatment of papers. PVA/Starch treated papers showed better results at elevated temperatures. Surface quality showed dependency on the sizing method used and linear nip pressure applied. All above mentioned variables determine the degree of polymer penetration into the paper web to a certain extent.
