Dept. of Industrial Engineering. Manufacturing processes -- Databases Hypertext systems Production engineering -- Data processing Dissertations -- Industrial engineering Thesis (M. Ing.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1991. This thesis reports on the design of a hypertext database of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) aimed at different audiences. Hypertext is non-sequential writing: a directed graph, where each node contains some amount of text or other information, like graphics, animation, or video. The nodes are connected by directed links. These links are activated by some or other means, for example buttons. When the user activates a button, he/she follows the associated link to its destination node, thus navigating within the hypertext network. True hypertext should make the user feel that he/she can move freely through the information according to his/her own needs. World Class Manufacturing is a manufacturing philosophy aimed at delivering a product of the required quality to one’s customer at the required time, at the lowest cost possible. To do this, certain techniques were developed (mainly in Japan), e.g. Total Quality Control, Single Minute Exchange of Dies and Just-In-Time Manufacturing.
