Hypersensitivity pneumonitis Dissertations -- Medicine Thesis (M.Sc.(Med.Biochemistry)) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1991. Pigeon breeders disease (PBD) is one of the allergic lung diseases collectively called "extrinsic allergic alveolitis" and is caused by the repeated inhalation of avian proteins. Only 7-10% of the breeders present with clinical symptoms while the others remain asymptomatic. In this study on the immunopathogenesis of PBD we have centered mainly on possible differences in the immune responses of asymptomatic and symptomatic breeders with respect to their individual antibody responses to the avian antigens as well as their in vitro proliferative responses to these antigens.
