ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis consists of two parts. Part one comprises a comprehensive investigation of the information systems field and its associated technologies in general. It commences by defining and explaining the most widely used terminologies encountered in the field, after which the functional aspects of an information system are examined. An overview of information systems concepts is concluded by examining the interdisciplinary nature of the field and by identifying the basic types of information systems. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis bestaan uit twee afdelings. Deel een beslaan 'n omvattende ondersoek na die inliggtingstelselveld en sy verwante tegnologieë in die algemeen. Die gedeelte begin met die definisie en verduideliking van die mees algemeen gebruikte terminologieë in die veld, waarna die funksionele aspekte van 'n inligtingstelsel ondersoek word.
