| spelling | oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/69464 The text-critical value of 4QDeuta,b,c,e,f,g,h,j,m,n,q Erasmus, Johannes Christoffel Cooke, J. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Ancient Studies. Bible -- Manuscripts, Hebrew Dead Sea scrolls -- Criticism, Textual Bible. Deuteronomy -- Criticism, Textual Dissertations -- Ancient Near Eastern Studies Dissertation (D. Litt.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1991. The scope of this study is the following Deuteronomy material found at cave 4 at Qumran: 4QDeutᵃ, 4QDeutᵇ, 4QDeutᶜ, 4QDeutᵉ, 4QDeutᶠ, 4QDeutᵍ, 4QDeutʰ, 4QDeutʲ, 4QDeutᵐ, 4QDeutⁿ and 4QDeutᑫ. The aim is to determine the “text-critical value” of these Deuteronomy manuscripts. “Value” suggests the task of evaluating whether these fragments can serve Old Testament textual criticism any purpose. In search of specific results, two fields of study were combined, viz. the traditional text-critical study – collating and evaluating variants, and new tools which the information age has brought us, namely computers and databases. This study was undertaken to show the usefulness of databases as exegetical aids in text-critical studies. The text-critical scholar faces enormous amounts of data which he has to cope with. Fortunately, computer applications have provided new possibilities in the manipulation and utilisation of these masses of information. Traditionally the work of a textual critic is divided into three stages, namely recensio, examinatio and emendatio. This study will concentrate on the first two. The first stage of recensio comprises two steps: collecting all sources where 4QDeut is extant, collating them and in so doing trying to establish relationships among them. The phase of evaluating variants represents a process of several logical, complementary steps that one has to follow. Amongst other the question of text-critical rules is treated. It is difficult and in fact premature to come to final conclusions on material that is firstly fragmentary and secondly diverse. Regarding orthography the first observation is the diversity of both plene and defective spelling systems. The second observation is the inconsistency in which the plene system is employed. There seems to be no specific pattern in which scribes used the plene system. There are eleven hands and each scribe had his own attitude towards the text and, as was seen above, each utilised his own system of spelling. Features that repeat themselves are grammatical “corrections” to more acceptable forms to avoid misunderstanding. Another feature that recurs is the tendency to harmonise. The texts of 4QDeut also amplify the significance of LXX. In a number of instances 4QDeut provide possible Vorlagen for LXX. In many of these instances the reading was formerly known only from LXX. The texts of 4QDeut and especially the variants attested to by 4QDeut, accentuate the fact that there existed a variety of texts and/or text traditions for Deuteronomy, as late as the early Herodian period (30–1 BCE). The premise that existed mainly before 1947, viz. that there were only three main witnesses for the Pentateuch is not acceptable anymore.
