A classification of all the well-known null placing methods and adaptive array configurations are made with specific reference to its applications and implementation possibilities. A short analytical tutorial on the basic concepts are then given for the unfamiliar reader. An experimental system was designed to demonstrate null steering principles in an anechoic chamber. The system makes provision for 4 transmitters on a 3 GHz carrier, a 4-element linear helix antenna array and coherent receivers for both the in-phase and quadrature channels providing full amplitude and phase control. the signals are then sampled at 100 kHz and filtered with a low-pass filter, giving the system a bandwidth of about 30 kHz. The signal processing are done in a fast A100 digital signal processing chip, controlled by a T800 transputer. This provides a very adaptable environment to investigate many different algorithms digitally with accuracy and relatively high speed. The A100 chip contains a tapped delay line which could be used for wide bandwidth experiments. Provision has also been made for controlling up to 4 A100's and for inserting preprocessors, making data throughput rates of up to 10 MHz possible. In conclusion, an affordable experimental system have been built for null-placing investigation in the communications field, yielding both good adaptability and promising performance.
