Ing.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1992. Remote marine sediment classification is useful for a number of purposes, including geological surveys, mining and marine civil engineering project. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate techniques for remote bottom and subbottom marine sediment classification, using a chirp sonar sweeping from 1 to 13kHz. It is shown that there are two basic identification methods applicable to a chirp sonar. The first method classifies the top layer from the estimated reflection coefficient, or bottom loss, of the signal reflected from the top sedimentary layer. The second method classifies subbottom layers by estimating the characteristic frequency dependent acoustic transfer function of the ediment through which the chirp signal passes. A simple appropriate model for the frequency dependent attentuation is given. Using this model, two classification techniques for estimating the attenuation coefficient are compared by numerical simulation in a noisy environment. It is found that, taking various factors into consideration, the instantaneous frequency (IF) method, a spectral-shift technique, yields better results than the matched filtering (MF) method, which is a correlation technique.
