Agric.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1992. Attempts were made to alter the growth of the spring flush and thus flowering in 'Clementine' (C. reticulata Blanco) via pruning, defoliation and growth regulator application. Pruning resulted in an increase in vigour and reduced flowering. This was the case irrespective of the (alternate) bearing phase. Early defoliation reduced flowering. Growth regulators stimulated vigour and reduced flowering. Generally, where vigour is enhanced, a reduction in flowering is observed, coupled with a reduction in sprouting density. Flowering and floral expression in 'Clementine' appear to have various components, viz. an inductive component and a shoot initiation component (Davenport, 1990) in addition to a third component, namely growth rate or vigour. Flowering and floral type is the integrated result of these three components. Neither of these three components can be manipulated in isolation.
