Various gas-liquid contacting techniques are compared for the ideal air-water system on the basis of the mass of oxygen absorbed per total energy consumption. This basis of comparison is also known as the energy efficiency. Energy efficiency data was calculated from design equations where these data could not be obtained from the literature. The energy efficiency of the bubble column is higher than the energy efficiency of the conventional mixed tank reactor, which is presently being used in biochemical leaching. Values of the mass transfer coefficient, kₗa, have been measured in a laboratory scale bubble column. Experimental data for the ideal air-water system and sand slurries compare favourably with corresponding data obtained from the literature. A modified bubble column with a perforated plate or rubber sparger as gas distributor, is recommended as an alternative to the conventional mixed tank reactor.
